1910 'Domesday' Tax Assessment
( An analysis by RW Standing )
Under the 1910 Finance Act, a valuation was made of all properties in England and Wales. The resulting so-called 'Domesday Tax' records give a brief description of each property, the names of its owner and occupier and a note of its value. Properties were shown on large scale Ordnance Survey maps, but few have survived today. There was much opposition to this incremental tax and it was eventually repealed by the 1920 Finance Act
The schedule (below) extracted from WSRO Catalogue Ref. IR4 is a rates assessment, with separate rateable property listed. Rate returns list every rateable property, and if a house had two historical dwellings these were separately rated, although the whole may have been in the one occupancy at the time. The occupiers noted will generally be those normally living there and paying the rent.
There are notable differences between a rates return, census, and manorial rental:
In a few instances a farmer may be given as occupier of two houses, where in fact it is the land he occupies, and the actual occupier of one house is omitted.
Examples: St Margarets - rated as two dwellings but occupied together as one.
Samuel Pyle - rated as occupier of Ecclesden and Avenals but probably living at Avenals.
The Lamb Inn - rated as owned by Norris, although deeds indicate it was a copyhold paying quit rent to Lady Somerset.
The records below are presented in two forms:
Users of this analysis will understand its limitations. It is subject to refinement and modification.
